NSW fast-tracks grid battery projects across three renewable zones

New South Wales has approved a coordinated package of battery storage projects in the Central-West Orana, New England and Illawarra Renewable Energy Zones. Combined, the assets are expected to add more than 3GWh of dispatchable storage to the state grid over the next two years. The projects are designed to absorb excess solar generation during the middle of the day and return that energy in the evening peak, reducing pressure on gas peakers and improving wholesale price stability. Network planners said the rollout will also improve system strength and frequency response in areas with rising renewable penetration. Industry groups have welcomed the approvals, noting that faster storage delivery is now critical to keeping reliability high as coal units retire in stages across the National Electricity Market.
